The Forager

Are you ready for an adventure?

There are so many places to go in my Big Backyard!

We have Big Garden, Little Garden, Experimental Garden. Big Pond, Little River and The Tree House. The Wooded Path. The Cabin. The Flat Spot. The Waterfall. Windy Ridge. River Path.

Friends with young children come for a visit; I provide maps and walkie-talkies when the older children want to go exploring on their own.

Summer snack!

Summer snack!

The first stop in today’s backyard adventure will find me looking for a snack, which will be just past these zinnias in the experimental garden. Look for those small, orange tomatoes through the green leaves. Do you see them? They are oh-so-juicy and fun to eat, straight from the vine. I rinse one off and pop it in my mouth. Yum! I’ll have a couple more before I go. (I call this my “experimental garden” because I tried starting a few new plants from seed. Oh, but that’s another story.)

Behind the Red Barn is the Big Garden, and beside that is a wild and wonderful JUNGLE of blackberries. I LOVE blackberries!

Blackberry jungle!

Blackberry jungle!

I cut the top out of a gallon milk jug and leave the handle on the jug. When I enter the world of blackberries, I’ll carry the plastic container in one hand and have a long-handled shovel in the other.

Why?

Well, the thicket in this blackberry jungle is so thick, I just want to have something with me to help me push my way through. I also need a way to insure that I can make enough NOISE while I’m in the thicket to encourage any other creatures living in there to move away from where I am to make room for me, too. Thump, thump, thump on the ground with the pointed part of the shovel before I put my foot down into a new spot. Then I listen. No sounds of other movement? Then I thump the shovel once again and move forward.

Oh, so juicy, these berries!

Oh, so juicy, these berries!

Mid-July heat; I’m wearing a long sleeved shirt, long pants and SOCKS. Dodged a few bees today, but look what I found! I’ll fill my container and feast on the wonderful treats of summertime.

Ahh….happy creating to you today, too!

Practical Application(s)

“It is good to love many things, for therein lies strength. Whoever loves much can accomplish much, and what is done with love is well done.” (Vincent Van Gogh)

All right, I’ll admit it….I love to do a great many things. Every once in a while, creative distractions lead to something else. Which leads to something else. And then to something else. If I’m not careful, I get scattered in SO many directions, I face the possibility that nothing could get accomplished!

I’ve been like this for as long as I remember. Yes, I’ve done research over the years into why this happens and when I discovered it was one of the natural characteristics of Creative People, I breathed a sigh of relief. Ah, that explains it, I thought. There are others who do that, too.

Straight Backed Chair

Straight Backed Chair

The practical applications for all this is that I can do a lot of useful things. In my quest to learn about Homesteading and Appalachian homecrafts, I’ve taught myself how to repair chairs. I have a fondness for straight backed chairs. (I have no idea why this is so.) On junkets to flea markets or antique shops, I’m drawn to them like a magnet. My latest project has been to repair the bottoms of a variety of chairs using a paper rush as well as an older handmade footstool using seagrass for the seat. When I got the footstool twenty-something years ago, it was woven with cornhusks which had been twisted and woven for the seat. I talked with the craftsman about his work and he shared a few tips.

It’s the end of May now and garden is mostly planted, except for a few things I wanted to start by seed. I’ll transplant those when they get a bit larger, too.
I classify all of this as “research” and move on. I know it will give authenticity to my characters as I work on (a variety of) writing projects.

Yes, I do. Thanks!

Yes, I do. Thanks!

Happy Creating!

Making Music

20140428-130303.jpg

I’ve heard it said that creativity is not a hobby–it is a Way Of Life.

So I suppose it is no surprise that this new addition to the collection of restoration projects has found me. Here’s a Hawaiian ukelele, passed along from some of my husband’s cousins. Wooden tuning pegs. The only remaining string, IS string. Our best guess puts it at more than forty plus years old, and the maker’s label inside is giving me a few clues. Remember–I DO love a good mystery and research. (Smile)

I’ll keep you posted on my progress. When I replace the strings, I’ll most likely want to learn how to play the thing.

Fiber Fun!

The bags of fiber roving came in the mail from the processor. Here they are, ready for spinning into yarn and then can be crocheted , knit or woven into something warm and snuggly.

Soon we will be shearing the alpaca again. Their thick fleece will be cleaned by picking out vegetable matter like leaves or hay. We separate the fibers by length and I can either comb it out by hand or send to the mill. Either way, I have the chance to use farm grown materials to create useful items.

Having even more creative fun down on the farm!

Flea Market Finds

Look!
A treasure!

I spend a lot of time at flea markets and estate sales. My acquisitions lean toward the functional, yet somewhat quirky. I need to be able to justify that piece to myself before I’ll bring it home. And of course I have to negotiate about the price.

This little table is made from sticks. I am drawn to the designs painted on the surface and, after a good cleaning and a few other things, will put it to good use. I have another one similar to this that’s been passed down from a grandmother and I think they’ll work well together.

Hand painted designs on handmade furniture will make me smile.

Every time.

Getting Ready, Getting Set…..to GO!

102_1277 (2)

My desk is a MESS!
I know, that’s nothing new, right?

I’ve been working on a drawing project and three sets of revisions for an illustration. I work in pencil on sketch paper, then tracing paper and use a light box for revisions.

I’m also trying to find my way through a “self-taught” program of learning how to create artwork digitally. So I ordered a drawing tablet with a stylus and have a program on my computer which allows me to create images which show up on the screen. (Baby steps; I take baby steps.)

AND I’ve been reading, reading, reading in preparation for an upcoming Southern Breeze Workshop. Cheryl Klein will be speaking in Atlanta at our Springmingle Conference 2014 and I’m registered for her Master Plot Intensive.

After The Snow

Can Spring be too far behind?

Can Spring be too far behind?

After what seemed like a week of snow, ice, and cold weather, the winter weather advisory lifted. We had firewood, water, food, batteries for flashlights (just in case), candles, books, puzzles and blankets, then settled in for mid-winter retreat. By all accounts reported, we think we fared pretty well. We had no power outages or frozen pipes.

When we weren’t taking care of farm chores or animals, we had time for other activities. I read. I wrote. Drew. Spun yarn for future projects. When being inside made me get “antsy” I donned cold weather gear, boots, and went outside. It was pretty cold in the barn/studio, so I took some time to straighten out my workspace in the house. I’ve moved my drawing table around and can look out the window to see the alpaca walking through the pasture.

I give thanks for blessings and understand how fortunate I am to be able to live a creative life.

Got Snow (at last!)

"Hay and it's snowing, too!"

“Fresh hay, and it’s snowing, too!”

We are having our first snowfall of the season. It’s soft, bright and beginning to stick to the ground. I’ve always loved snows like this!

I’m not working out in the studio today–yet– still I’m in the snow. Animals need to be fed and watered. Every day. Today I heat the water and carry it out to them. The water will be just right when it mixes with the cooler (or frozen!) water already in the pan. When “farm chores” are finished, I can settle inside the house by the fire with hot tea or a good book. Before it gets dark, I’ll go outside and do it all again.

The regularity of farm chores sometimes reminds me of the discipline I must strive for in my creative life if I am to be productive.

Every. Day.
Make. Something.

See The Colors

Dear Creative Friends,

The Christmas season was a busy one out here on the farm. So…sorry… I haven’t gotten in touch with you earlier. I’ve been busy!

I’m one of those folks who enjoy making things for Christmas gifts. If I can’t personally fabricate the item itself, then I will do everything I can to add to it for a personal, creative touch. I baked–yes, baked–cookies from “scratch” successfully for the first time in quite a while. The secret was in the parchment paper that I put on the cookie sheet before baking and then put the small rounded spoonfuls of dough on the paper. What a snap!

Home Sweet Home has a new meaning!

Home Sweet Home has a new meaning!

And I LOVE to play with food. I made a BIG cookie, cut it into small squares and eventually, made a lovely little candy creation with cream cheese icing all around. This took some time and I enjoyed eating my mistakes before it was completed. You could call it a house or ski resort. I loved to watch the children at our family gathering sneak by and snatch a few candies. Some of the grownups were fun to watch, too!

So now it is way past New Year’s Day and I hope you’ve had a good beginning. I am hesitant to make formal resolutions and gave that up a few years back. Now I just call it my “Hope Tos” list. It’s very short.

This year, I hope to draw and write more, to be more creative, to be grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and to celebrate every day.

A colorful shopping trip!

A colorful shopping trip!

In honor of the New Year and to begin the celebration, I hit the after Christmas sales at my closest art supply store for some new drawing materials.

I’m all set!

Hark!

Handmade angel

Handmade angel

November came and went. Fall was beautiful out here on the farm. I stayed very busy with the animals, working out in the barn when I could or inside the house creating handmade items for Christmas gift-giving. Many wonderful hours have been spent in front of the fireplace– knitting, sewing, spinning and with a cup of hot tea or coffee. Yum!

I’m happy to report that it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I imagine my studio space is more than a little bit messy and I THOUGHT about taking a photo, but no…that might reveal too much about my work habits. I try, really, to keep things organized but it just doesn’t happen. Honestly Santa, I try to be good, I really do.

What’s that you say? Wait a minute….Santa’s laughing….Ho Ho Ho! Admittedly he thinks the idea of a clean workspace this time of year is very funny indeed.

I’d love to see Santa’s workshop.

Maybe, just maybe, my space looks a lot like his.

Happy Creating!
